Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day everybody.

Although I am a bit confused about the date. Earth day really should be held on October 23. Everyone knows that the earth was created on 23 October 4004 BC at 6 pm to be precise. Well at least according to Archbishop James Ussher.

He was born in Dublin on January 4th , 1581 in Dublin, to a well-to-do family. He was the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland between 1625 until his death in 1656.

He also calculated the dates of other biblical events, concluding, for example, that Adam and Eve were driven from Paradise on Monday 10 November 4004 BC.

Noah’s ark touched down on Mt Ararat on 5 May 2348 BC `on a Wednesday.

How did Ussher come up with these fairly specific and exacts dates? He used the chronologies in the Hebrew text of Genesis 5 and 11, together with other Bible passages.

To be fair to him he was only off by a few billion years.

But why is April 22 designated as ‘Earth Day’ ?

During a UNESCO Conference, in 1969 in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell suggested a designated day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, he proposed March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature’s balance was later sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later a United States Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed the idea to hold a nationwide environmental educational forum on April 22, 1970.

This would be the date to be adopted as ‘Earth Day’ which had now goen into its 51st anniversary.

It is now an international annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection. And includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG, including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.

EARTHDAY.ORG missions statement is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.

In November 1995 Michael Jackson released the single “Earth Song” I am not sure of he released it with ‘Earth Day’ in mind but I do think it is an appropriate song to finish up with.

Beat it- The guitar solo

beat it

The guitar solo on Michael Jackson’s “Beat it” could have sounded completely different and perhaps it would not have become the massive hit it was if it wasn’t for Quincy Jones’s persistence.

Eddie van Halen was  relaxing at home one day in the summer of 1982, where he suddenly received a call, The caller claimed to be Quincy Jones. Eddie thinking it was a prank, kindly told to caller to leave by using 2 words including 3 f’s. One at the start of the first word and 2 at the end of the 2nd word(I don’t mean Funny Stuff). He then put down the phone.

However he caller called 4 more times, van Halen then realized that it was indeed the legendary music producer Quincy Jones.

Quincy had just working with Michael Jackson on his mega selling album “Thriller” and he wanted Eddie van Halen to play the solo on “Beat it”

Quincy Jones and Michale Jackson took a skeleton version of Beat it up to Eddie van Halen’s place. After Eddie van Halen did some minor adjustment to the part of the song, he recorded the solo and he did it in one take.

He did not charge anything for it either, no fee no royalties, totally free. Well kind of, legend has it he did ask for a six pack of beer.

Eddie van Halen wasn’t the only legendary guitarist involved in the project, Steve Lukather from the rock band Toto also worked on the Thriller album.

Billie Jean- The dark story behind the Michael Jackson classic.

BillieJeanSingleMichaelJacksonPress050312

Who doesn’t know this classic Michael Jackson song? I have heard the song thousands of time and never gave the lyrics a second thought. It was not like it was controversial or anything, after all it was written by squeaky clean Michael Jackson, right??

But there is a darker side to the song, although not verified by Michael himself but by one of his biographers,J. Randy Taraborrelli, when you listen to the song it makes sense.

Michael Jackson claimed Billie Jean was based on the groupies that used to hang around Jackson and his brothers when they were in The Jackson 5.

'60s R&B Quintet "Jackson 5"

“Billie Jean is kind of anonymous. It represents a lot of girls. They used to call them groupies in the ’60s…They would hang around backstage doors, and any band that would come to town they would have a relationship with, and I think I wrote this out of experience with my brothers when I was little. There were a lot of Billie Jeans out there. Every girl claimed that their son was related to one of my brothers.”

J. Randy Taraborrelli promoted the theory that “Billie Jean” was derived from a real life experience the singer faced in 1981. The Magic & The Madness documents how a young woman wrote Jackson a letter, which informed the singer that he was the father of one of her twins. Jackson, who regularly received letters of this kind, had never met the woman in question and ignored it. The woman, however, continued to send Jackson more letters, which stated that she loved him and wanted to be with him. She wrote of how happy they would be if they raised the child together. She pondered how Jackson could ignore his own flesh and blood. The letters disturbed the singer to the extent that he suffered nightmares.

Following the letters, Jackson received a parcel containing a photograph of the fan, as well as a letter and a gun. Jackson was horrified; the letter asked that the pop singer kill himself on a certain day and at a specific time. The fan would do the same once she had killed their baby. She wrote that if they could not be together in this life, then they would be in the next. To the mother’s dismay, Jackson had the photograph of the woman framed and hung above the dining room table of their family home. Afterwards, the Jacksons discovered that the fan had been sent to a psychiatric hospital.

Allegedly Jackson framed a picture of the stalker she’d sent to him in his home.

Finishing with the song, you can make up your own mind if it was about a groupie or deranged stalker, I am going with the latter one.

Michael Jackson-What’s in a name?

I am deviating a bit from my regular blogs for this more quirky and lighthearted blog.Living in an English speaking country my name is quite unique so my name is automatically associated to only me(at least where I live) , but the name Michael Jackson is fairly common and yet it is only associated with one man.

However there are several men who carry the same name and are famous(sometimes infamous) in their respective professions.

Starting off with that one man, the most famous of them all.

Michael Jackson: American singer-songwriter, dancer and record producer.

Called the “King of Pop”,his contributions to music, dance, and fashion along with his publicized personal life made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades.

The eighth child of the Jackson family (one of whom died in infancy), Michael made his professional debut in 1964 with his elder brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon as a member of the Jackson 5.

800px-jackson_5_tv_special_1972

He began his solo career in 1971. In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. His music videos, including those of “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, and “Thriller” from his 1982 album Thriller, are credited with breaking racial barriers and transforming the medium into an art form and promotional tool. The popularity of these videos helped bring the television channel MTV to fame. Jackson’s 1987 album Bad spawned the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Bad”, “The Way You Make Me Feel”, “Man in the Mirror”, and “Dirty Diana”, becoming the first album to have five number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

He continued to innovate with videos such as “Black or White” and “Scream” throughout the 1990s, and forged a reputation as a touring solo artist. Through stage and video performances, Jackson popularized a number of complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive sound and style has influenced numerous artists of various music genres.Sadly he died on June 25 ,2009.

Michael Jackson is a UK male singer who was lead vocalist with the heavy metal band Satan/Pariah

satan

This is Michael Jackson is also a singer but from the complete opposite spectrum of the music industry. As the name of his band suggests it is not as clean cut as the other singer with the same name.

Michael was born in Lancaster, Lancashire in 1964 to Estelle & Michael Jackson. He was brought up by his mother in Morecambe, Lancashire from an early age. A fanatical Queen fan Michael Jackson dreamed of being a rock singer like his idol Freddie Mercury.

Entering the Merchant Navy straight from school Michael spent 5 years sailing all over the world while singing with the band Rough Edge between assignments. Eventually he decided to answer an advertisement, learned the required songs and traveled to London for his audition with the band Satan. After a successful interview at Clink Studios, Tower Bridge, London Michael moved there to join Satan.
