Suicide is Painless—The Death of an Evil Man

In the bunker’s depths, darkness crept,
Where shadows danced and silence wept.
In April’s final, fateful breath,
History marked a momentous death.

The tyrant’s reign, a brutal sway,
Had led the world astray.
But as the war’s end drew near,
His downfall echoed clearly.

In Berlin’s heart, besieged and torn,
The dictator faced fate’s scorn.
As allies closed their tightening grip,
And desperation began to grip.

Within those walls, where fear did dwell,
Hitler bid his last farewell.
No escape, no grand retreat,
Just bitter end, in grim defeat.

A gunshot rang, a final cry,
As Hitler chose to die.
His reign of terror met its end,
Yet scars of his deeds still rend.

In history’s annals, his name remains,
A reminder of humanity’s pains.
But in his death, a lesson lies,
Of the cost when power blinds the eyes.

The Reporting of the Death of Evil

On 29 April 1945, Hitler completed his will and last political testament and married his longtime mistress, Eva Braun. He also received the news that Benito Mussolini met his death in Italy. Mussolini’s corpse, along with that of his mistress, Clara Petacci, had been smashed in fury by a mob and hung upside down outside a gas station.

The following day, 30 April 1945, while holed up in his bunker under his headquarters in Berlin, Hitler committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. His wife, Eva Braun also killed herself.

This is how the media reported the news.

One of Time magazine’s most iconic covers of all time was used to mark Hitler’s death.

Inside the edition, TIME Magazine would also mention the death of Mussolini.

Karl Lehmann was a German-Jewish refugee. He arrived at Leighton Park in 1936 from Cologne, Germany, where conditions were no longer safe. Karl joined the BBC Monitoring Service, first at Evesham, then Reading, where he listened to and translated German wartime broadcasts, including the one on 1 May 1945 announcing the death of Adolf Hitler.

The 24-year-old monitoring German state radio when listeners were told to prepare for an important announcement. “They played solemn music and then they said Hitler had died” he recalls. “They said he had fallen fighting Bolshevism. It was announced in a very sombre way.”

“We were the first people in Britain to hear the announcement,” he remembers. “The whole building cheered. We realised how important it was. It meant the end of the war against Germany.”

The Führer is dead. Auf nie wiedersehen.

For all of you who don’t know German, the second part of the title translates to “that we will never see you again” It has always been a puzzle to me why the death of Adolf Hitler was not turned into a global holiday. Maybe it is because of fears it also may be used by followers of the Austrian turned German leader.

I know History Channel is airing a show celled “Hunting Hitler” aiming to proof that he didn’t die but escaped to Argentina, their investigation is omitting some key elements though, like eye witness reports of those in the bunker. They also work on the assumption that he was last seen in public on his birthday April 20 1945, this is also not true. This is the last picture taken of Hitler on April 28 1945.

Another key factor they fail to mention in the show is the fact that a day before he killed himself he got married to Eva Braun. Aside from all of that, he often said if he felt the war was lost he’d kill himself. So let’s forget about all these conspiracy therories for a while.

The world reacted in different ways on the news of his death.

The Irish Taosieach(prime minister), Éamon de Valera,  and president Douglas Hyde, bot offered condolences to Germany when the news of Hitler’s death broke.Ireland was neutral during WWII and de Valera stated he was only following diplomatic protocol.

The German embassy in Sweden flew the flag at half mast the day Hitler died, April 30, 1945.

The Germans had a different spin on the news the headlines in the Oberdonau-Zeitung seems to indicate rather then having committed suicide he was ‘fallen’, he ‘sacrificed’ his life in the battle against Bolshevism.
